What’s the Deal with Older Gringas and Younger Men?
July 31 2009
We’ve all met them. There are quite a few in our community. You know, those women of a certain age who have that obscene grin on their faces and who radiate a happy glow? Their boyfriends are young enough to be their sons, or in some cases, their grandsons. How do you feel about this?
Well, the Yucatan Yentas always have opinions. On everything. And our opinion on this particular issue, is – You Go, Girl! Have a wonderful time! May the force be with you!
I mean, tell the truth. If you weren’t committed to a partner, or if you weren’t too uptight, might you ever have a teensy thought about doing the same thing? You would know people would say nasty things about you, know that the experience might bite you in the ass, but one look into those sincere, beautiful brown eyes could make all trepidations evaporate.
What would other people say about you? That he’s with you because you have money? Well, don’t you have more than he does? And so what? Most of us, even those of us living on fixed incomes, have more money than eighty percent of the people around us. Does he have a lowly trade? Well duh, did he have the educational and economic wherewithal to become a brain surgeon?
Do people say nasty things about men with girlfriends young enough to be their daughters? Well, maybe, but we are all used to it – it is not even a phenomenon worth gossiping about.
Don’t get us wrong – we’re not saying it’s wrong to gossip. It’s never wrong to gossip. But be honest with yourself. If the sight of a sister gringa cuddling up to a very young man just chokes you with anger, causes you embarrassment, or makes you feel like the gringa needs your personal guidance and strong advice, you might consider the possibility that you are on some level, dare we say it, jealous.
I mean look at that glow. You can’t get it with Lancome or Clinique products or even with a lot of alcohol. We know where that glow comes from, don’t we girls? And if we’ve never experienced it ever in our lives, then the sight of two happy people would make us terribly upset.
So we understand the reason for your negative feelings. And we hope that you do too.
Madi uses an actual teen term for this: Cougar. So who knew??
