There are ever more films, books and webstuff focused on 2012 -- a date which, according to indigenous Mayas, was "created" by westerners interpreting the Maya calendar. Its dubious that 12/21/12 has the significance being attributed to it, given the complex issues around correlating the Maya Long Count and Gregorian calendars. Jenkins' "galactic alignment" is also in question, see especially Marcos Villasenor's website. But our solar system and galaxy do have vast cycles, with much associated ancient wisdom, so maybe "the change of ages" is truly upon us. History shows us that many brilliant minds in the past have latched onto similar proficies to wake up feeling sheepish on January 1, 1000, or January 1, 2000, or on many other such days that failed to meet the expectations derived from earth-bound and celestial time-centered musings. It's fun, of course, and the idea is wonderful fodder for fiction. Mostly, it's a god-send for the Yucatan tourist industry. What’s to study?
