First of all, it's Bruce Scofield, not Paul Schofield. I think Paul Schofield was an actor...

Anyway, interesting post. Wish I had time to follow all the links and read up about it. Will most certainly go see the movie just cuz it sounds like fun!

Interesting about your plot developments and investigations on ebooks at amazon.com. There are ever more films, books and webstuff focused on 2012 -- a date which, according to indigenous Mayas, was "created" by westerners interpreting the Maya calendar. Its dubious that 12/21/12 has the significance being attributed to it, given the complex issues around correlating the Maya Long Count and Gregorian calendars. Jenkins' "galactic alignment" is also in question, see especially Marcos Villasenor's website. But our solar system and galaxy do have vast cycles, with much associated ancient wisdom, so maybe "the change of ages" is truly upon us.

For an informative and entertaining fiction treatment, based on Hindu yugas and Jenkins' Isapan cosmology, read my book:
Leonide Martin, "Dreaming the Maya Fifth Sun: A Novel of Maya Wisdom and the 2012 Shift in Consciousness," Infinity Publishing, 2006. (at amazon.com or buybooksontheweb.com)

Here is a comment someone sent me on email:

By 2012, most of the world will know just how bad things are (global warming) and how much worse they are going to be. I invite you to suspect that instead of an instantaneous disaster, the slow crisis has been ongoing...and ful realization might happen around that date.

What's to study? History shows us that many brilliant minds in the past have latched onto similar proficies to wake up feeling sheepish on January 1, 1000, or January 1, 2000, or on many other such days that failed to meet the expectations derived from earth-bound and celestial time-centered musings. It's fun, of course, and the idea is wonderful fodder for fiction. Mostly, it's a god-send for the Yucatan tourist industry.
