Restaurants – Acitron and Salads

With Ka’a Pej closed, there are two other restaurants on this little row, one block north of Circuito on the Paseo (just past the glorieta with the fountain), on your right going north.

Salads

The name of the restaurant is Salads. It’s just under the closed Ka’aPej. A pleasant, immaculate little place with a trillion salad choices. All are made to order before your eyes and all the ingredients are sparkling fresh. As far as greens go, they seem to be limited to iceberg lettuce, and no matter what else you do to a salad, if the greens aren’t more interesting, it isn’t a sophisticated salad. But it’s healthy and okay. They make wonderful smoothies and I thought they tasted too good to be true. They were. They used ice cream.

So if you want to stop for a quick, fairly economical bite that’s easy on the calories, the place is great. But if you want an Eating Experience, go down the row a bit to Acitron.

Acitron

This is an upscale comfortable place with an unique menu and the best service I’ve ever seen in Merida, or maybe anywhere. It makes being there a real pleasure. The room is tasteful and subdued. They have marvelous mixed fruit juices.

We split a salad – mixed greens, canned tangerine slices, peanuts, jicama and topped off with a large, candied hibiscus, which was delicious. Where do you suppose you can get candied hibiscus?

My friend Alinda had the cochinita lasagna, which sounds weird, but was a successful cross of Italy and Yucatan. Somehow that red piggie fit right in with the cheese and noodles. It was cooked in an individual (large) metal container and presented nicely.

I had chicken breasts stuffed with asparagus and cream sauce. The sauce was great; the chicken was a tad dry.

The food plates were beautiful and appetizing. It is a bit pricey, but a great place for a relaxed extended lunch. There were several tables of business people with computers.

Both the chef and the owner (I think the chef was one of the owners too) stopped by and asked how we liked everything.

We had our coffee outside. It was raining lightly and we were under a big umbrella with a cool breeze and an interesting sky.
