Xmas – New Year and beyond in Merida

I haven’t blogged for a while because I’m exhausted. There are an awful lot of social and public events at this time of year. Parties, parades, light displays, concerts… On Three Kings Day (Jan. 6), everyone eats a ring cake called rosca de reyes. You can go from one rosca party to another. There was one rosca that took up most of the city block between the big hotels. They had the street shut off and hundreds of people paid 25 pesos each for a huge piece of cake. It was a benefit.

On New Year’s Eve there were literally hundreds of thousands of firecrackers set off. It sounded like a war zone, beginning at about 11 PM. The dog was not happy. I think I saw a UFO. It was a large display of red lights that looked and pulsated like a jellyfish and moved horizontally across the sky until it disappeared behind some buildings.

Things are starting to get back to normal now. Here are a few pics from the last few weeks.

We had breakfast at Rosas and Xocolate, the new 17-room luxury hotel on the Paseo Motejo. The design of the place is clean and welcoming, there are lots of inviting nooks and crannies, the food is excellent and reasonably priced, and the owner is charming. (He visited our table.) The pictures below are in the hotel.

Jeekers Beryl ! This is wonderful to see. Now I want you to keep your camera with you always… or else make sketches of what you see.

  2. Marianne says:

Your wonderful photos pretty well sum up the new year in Merida. Is your camera ready to catch the icicles?
