My first glance at the photos reminded me of an exhibit I had seen many years ago, probably in SF. And I just found, via Google, that it is resurfacing! Quite frankly, I loved this Mummias exhibit, as I did the one in Guanajuato. For a fascinating journey, discover the Mummias de Guanajuato! (Copy, paste: http://www.mummytombs.com/mummylocator/group/guanajuato.closeup.htm)

About 7 years ago the LA Science Museum had a German display on the human body and surprisingly well labeled and documented and accurate. Everything was well preserved. In fact, the first area of was a room of thoroughly described each step in procuring the samples, methodology in carefully preserving each in true-to-life examples. The total exhibit took many years to complete. There were both men and women, muscular and skelatal examples, cardio vascular systems with arterys and veins, brain and neurological systems, respiratory diseases, body movements. The exhibit showed healthy body parts compared with diseased or damaged e.g.: carcinomas, emphazema examples. I found it to be an excellent well labelled and documented display. Since this show was open during Easter/Passover holidays many of the viewers were medical personnel and their children carefully explaining to them what they were seeing.

I was completely transfixed by everything I saw and by the respect shown for the people whose bodies had been willed for science.

I think that this is one of the most disgusting phenomena I have witnessed in my life and I won't have ANY part of it. It appeals to the same dark side of human nature that compelled the Nazis to make lampshades out of interesting bits of human skin harvested from powerless concentration camp victims. Shame on the Yenta for lining the pockets of the exploiters of powerless humans! Shame on the modern commandants who rob the dignity these people by posing them like skinned hunting trophies!

Interesting how an exhibit that is so heavily treated not to smell bad can break through the metaphor and kind of stink. I got a scrunched up nose just reading your report. Thanks
