My plans at this time are to be at Mixco Viejo in the Guatemalan highlands for the event. It is one of those end of the road type ruins that gets a lot of use by the local Mayans. It should be less of a zoo compared to the more well known sites.

I’m sure that’s a wise choice, but sometimes the zoo aspect can be fascinating.

I’ve been to Tikal for a first day of summer and a spring equinox fandango, in a non-2012 year and it was too uptight for me. I will say: I saw more albino people in those two days than I have saw in all the days of the rest of my life put together. Do you know anything about that?

        • BG says:

No. I’ve been to Chichen for the Equinox and it is not something I would do twice, I guess. I don’t know why there would be albinos in Tikal Guatemala. Although there used to be a town in the center of the YUc. peninsula with a number of albinos, perhaps because of the close familial marriages (not near any other populations). I know that for a while Celestun, on the coast, was isolated and could be accessed only by sea and there were a number of birth anomalies there. I imagine there are villages in northern Guatemala at least as isolated as these.

I suspect it has something to do with culture. It is not just Tikal by any means. I was thinking you might have read something about it in their mythology. What I noticed was that the albinos tended to be the shamans conducting the ceremonial acts at the solar cycle events. The numbers would indicate an un-natural selection process. Just another thing to put on the study list.
